The Crack-Age-Test. The new testing method from ADLER Solar improves the assessment of micro cracks

AS_FOTO_Web_RGB_02ADLER Solar is offering insurers, installation operators, and installers a new testing method to distinguish old micro cracks from recent ones in crystalline PV modules.

Micro cracks occur in PV modules due to strong external effects. Hailstones can be a reason for them, or even pressure from a knee or foot. Depending on their characteristics, micro cracks can severely impair the performance capability of the affected cells in the PV module.

The crack-age-test from ADLER Solar enables insurers to distinguish current damages caused by severe weather from older damages. This can in some cases enable events that may not have been insured or for which claims have already been forfeited to be excluded and thus a case of damage to be more clearly evaluated.

The new method also offers installation operators and installers an opportunity to distinguish older micro cracks that are not clearly due to the original event from recent events. One example of this is faulty handling of modules, which is still quite frequent in common practice, such as stepping on the module surface during maintenance or fault-clearing.

The test is offered as a stationary test at the ADLER Solar service centers in Bremen and Anzing. It is conducted step by step with the aid of a combination of the already established electroluminescence testing method and a new imaging process. Using a comparative assessment of the various images, a distinction can be made between recent micro cracks and any older micro cracks which may be present.

Thanks to the crack-age-test, there is now an instrument that provides clarity in the assessment of micro cracks and thus can make an important contribution to the regulation of damages.
